ROger Dale Brown - Plein Air & landscapes workshop

  • Easels - Bring an easel large enough to hold your canvas sizes.
  • Pallet
  • Paint 

Reds: Cad Red Light, Quinacridone Rose or Red, Alizarin
Yellows: Cad Yellow Medium, Cad Lemon
Blues: Ultramarine Blue, Cobalt, Cerulean Blue Hue
Earth Tones: Burnt Sienna, Raw Umber, Ivory Black, Transparent Red Oxide.
White: Titanium White

  • Brushes

Any brush you use in your studio or on location is fine to bring.
Below are are some of the brushes Rogers uses but
do not feel you need to buy all or any of these. 
This is just for informational purposes, incase you are interested in what he uses. 
He does try different brushes so, he may have a brush not listed at the workshop: 
-Bristle Filberts #10, 8, 6, 4... Rosemary or Trekell brushes.
-Soft hair synthetic filbert. Rosemary Master Series 278 #10, 8, 4
-Synthetic long filbert #2, 1... Rosemary eclipse...
-1 - 2” chip brush from Home Depot or Lowes
-2 inch softening brush, Rosemary or Trekell
-Old plastic hotel room keys
-Bristle Egbert #8, 6... Rosemary or Trekell.
-Bristle flat #12, 8...
-Fan brush Trekell
-Synthetic bright “6, 4, 2...Rosemary Ivory
-Large,Medium and small size trowel shape palette knife

Roger endorses both Rosemary and Trekell, and has brush sets with both companies.
If you want to buy brushes, this is an easy way to ensure you have good brushes for the class and
it includes many of the brushes he uses:

Note: These supplies are not in the above will still need a good quality palette knife,

hotel key card, q-tips and 2” chip brush from Home Depot or Lowe's.

  • Canvas

2 - 12x16 inexpensive canvas panels for exercises
2 - Canvases 16x20 up to 24x30 (your choice) for in the studio just make sure it fits
on your easel.
2 - Panels for Plein air day. Your choice of size, but try to keep it 12x16 or under.

  • Other Stuff

Bring several of your own Plein Air sketches and reference images... Photos, drawings.

-1/2" to 1" masking tape
-Odorless Mineral spirits. I use Gamsol. DO NOT BRING REAL TURP. 
-Brush cleaner. Holbein makes a really good one for studio. 
-Small sketch pad and pencil
-Paper Towels
-Plastic shopping bags for trash
-Optional- Wet canvas carrier. 
-One landscape painting from home for private critique. Not too large.
